Works For Me Wednesday - The Timer

I will admit right now that in no way did I come up with this idea on my own. Flylady and many other home management gurus will tell you to try this, too.

Basically, I have ADD. Ok, not really, but I do tend to "lose my focus" from time to time. Jason will just stand there and chuckle at me, because at any given time, the dishwasher will be open with half of the dishes put away, the washing machine will be half way full of dirty clothes (with the piles sitting right next to it), and I'll be cleaning out some random closet at the same time. It gets pretty scary sometimes.

Enter the timer. My new best friend. I simply set it for anywhere between 10-30 minutes (depending on the job and what time I have available) and I DO NOT allow myself to quit my specific job until the timer goes off or I get done, whichever comes first.

I know this may sound extremely simple to most of you out there. But I have to believe that someone else in this world shares my disorder. Since I cannot laugh enough at how every kid has some sort of psychological issue these days, I'm going to invent one for myself. I'm calling it "GYHOOYBAPA". It stands for "Get Your Head Out Of Your Butt And Pay Attention" disorder.

Mark my words that there is actually something similar out there with a very specific treatment plan involved. Including medication, of course. For now, though, I'll use my timer.

Do you use a timer? Are you naturally focused? What works for you?

Wow, I don't know that would work for me. I have tried the 10 Minuit energy thing. And I can not always make it 10 min. Till I have to sit down. But I will give it a try with the timer.
Thanks

I find the timer to be helpful too... when I actually remember to use it!

Ever see the comparison of the husband and wife's declaration that they are going to bed? I'll substitute from my own life.

When the husband says he's going to bed, he simply goes to bed. When the wife says she's going to bed, she stops to pick up a kid's shoe and takes it to the bedroom, where she sees a wet towel on the floor. She lays the shoe down and goes to hang up the towel, only to find it stinks. So she takes it to the washer, where she finds she left clean clothes in the bottom. So she lays the towel aside and goes to put the clean clothes in the dryer but sees she has clothes in there to be folded. So she leaves the clothes in the washer and folds the clothes from the dryer. She then takes the basket of clean clothes to the kids' bedroom and sees homework on the floor that didn't get put back into their bookbag. So she takes the homework to the bookbag and sees that his lunchbox needs to be cleaned out.. . .and the list of things she does on the way to bed goes on and on. It would be hysterically funny. . .if we all couldn't relate!

You are SO not alone! It does make you wonder, though. Where would our families would be if we were so focused we didn't do a thousand things (even only part way) along the way to accomplishing one thing??? I say, let them laugh (and be thankful). . .just stay our of our way. LOL!

Thanks for the laugh. :) Good luck with your timer!

The timer also works wonders on kids who take too long at the dinner table :)
